Hi all,
I have a Lamont in my family as well, but not much info on her. Her name is Janet (Jennet) Lamont, born about 1776, Killean, Isle of Mull, Argyleshire. She married a Peter (McGhiel) MacGregor in 1801, in Killean. They immigrated to Canada in March 1842 to Sydenham Township with all but one of their children. Other then this, I have nothing else on her. Any further info would be appreciated. Looking forward to putting faces to some of the names I see on the list in May at the MUGG.
Thanks

No sign of the family in the 1851 census so I guess that they had emigrated by
then.

Hope this helps.

In a report by John Telfer, the Crown Lands Agent, the MacGregors were recorded as living in a one storey log house on Lot 16, Concession "B", and had cleared 8 acres which were under crop (wheat, potatoes, and oats). They had a further 6 acres cleared. They also owned two cows and two oxen.
Peter MacGregor received the Crown patent for the east half of lot 16, Concession "B" in 1849.

Taken from info passed out at the MacGregor Family Sisquicentennial Reunion at Owen Sound 25 July 1992. During the early 1840s, John Telfer, the Crown Lands agent, located many Scottish families at the north end of the Lake Shore Line in Sydenham Township. The area was known as the Scotch Block. Unlike the Irish Block of Sydenhan Township, which Telfer laid out for settlement a few years later, the Scotch Block was not settled by an homogeneous group of pioneers. Included among the initial settlers of the Scotch Block were Scots newly arrived from the Highlands, the Isles, the Lowlands and the Borders; there were a few first and second generation Canadian families of Scottish background from the more settled areas of the province; there was a mix of
Gaelic-speakers and English-speakers; there were representatives from all three branches of Presbyterianism of the time (the Auld Kirk, the Free Church, and the United Presbyterians) and there was at least one Scottish Roman Catholic family.

The Crown Lands Department offered free grants of 50 acre parcels of virgin bush in Sydenham Township to all men over 16 years of age under the condition that they clear the land and plant crops. They also had the option of purchasing additional acreage at low government rates.

Although Peter MacGregor and his family were not the first to be located by Telfer in the Scotch Block, they were among the very earliest. By securing "location tickets" from Telfer for free grant land and by purchasing adjacent acreage the family reserved for themselves a block of 450 aces of bush on both sides of the Lake Shore Line. Lot 16 concession "B" was assigned to Peter MacGregor and his son Peter the younger; son John got lot 15 concession "B", son-in-law Hugh Livingstone got lot 17 concession "B"; son Dougald got lot 18 concession "B"; and son Donald got lot 16 concession "C".

In August 1843 Telfer recorded that the MacGregors were living in a one storey log house on lot 16 concession “B”, and had cleared 8 acres which were under crop (wheat, potatoes, and oats). They had a further 6 acres chopped but not cleared. They also owned two cows and two oxen.

Peter MacGregor and Janet Lamont were Gaelic-speakers. All of their children and many of their grandchildren, preferred to speak Gaelic instead of English. For many years after Peter and Janet's deaths, whenever their children and grandchildren gathered for a family function or social event they spoke among themselves only in Gaelic - often to the great annoyance of their in-laws.

The MacGregors attended Johnstone, Presbyterian Church , a frame church erected in 1855 on lot 11 concession “C”. It was one of the first churches in Sydenham Township. It was built by adherents of the Auld Kirk, on land donated by Willliam Johnstone. For the first 20 years, worship in the Johnstone Church was often conducted in Gaelic.

Peter MacGregor received the Crown patent for the east half of lot 16 concession "B" in 1849. He passed away before the 1851 census was taken and he was buried on his farm. His widow Janet Lamont died on September 1, 1866, aged 90 years, and was buried in the Johnstone Presbyterian Church graveyard.
