Found a reference on the rootsweb site. There was an article on Captain Archie McArthur who was a victim of the storm of Nov 9th, 1913. His body was found near Southampton, 68 years of age, born on homestead near Johnston, married to Miss Lucy McGregor, survived by 3 sons and 1 daughter; Alex and Donald of Ashtabula and John of Johnstone (sp?)and Mrs. Joe Beatty of Carlyle. Also survived by 3 brothers and 2 sisters; Arthur of Johnstown(sp?), Donald of Stayner and John of Midland and Mrs. James Lee of Alaska and Mrs. W.A. Bell of Kenora.
The dates don't quite match up but perhaps the person who transcribed the info made a mistake on his age at death. Jane Quigley

I had a look in the Bruce county archives in Southampton today and found an article about Capt Archie McArthur .

The light bulb was broken in the reader so I couldn't make a copy today.
Send me your address if you want a copy and I'll get one before the summer is out.

I couldn't see a date on the article, however here are some notes I made:

Body found of Capt McArthur near Southampton. In good condition and dressed warmly with over $500 in his pockets. He was one of the victims of the storm of Nov 9th.

Captain McArthur was 68 years of age and was born on the homestead near Johnston. He was married to Miss Lucy McGregor also of Johnstown.

Survived by three sons and one daughter. Alex and Donald of Ashtabula and John of Johnstone and Mrs Joe Beatty of Carlyle. Also survived by three brothers and two sisters. Arthur of Johnstown , Donald of Staynor and John of Midland. Two sisters Mrs James Lee of Alaska and Mrs. W.A. Bell of Kenora.

I was in Owen Sound last week and they have a genealogical section in their public library. I did notice a McArthur family tree there. ( Not a very big one)

There certainly were a lot of McArthur families around in that area.
Especially in the census records for Sullivan and Sydeham and Collingwood.)

I have two McArthurs who married McCaffers

Catharine McArthur born approx 1805 Islay died after 1871 Sydeham township, Grey county married on May 24 1824 in Kilchoman to Neil McCaffer born c. 1800 Islay and died before 1871 in Collingwood township, Grey county.

Sarah McArthur born Jan 17 1845 died about 1914 married to Angus McCaffrey born Islay 1836 and died 1918 in Port Elgin

This family lived mainly in Sullivan township Grey county, then retired to Paisley( Bruce County)

Hope this helps

Great Lakes Storm of 1913
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Great Lakes Storm of 1913, historically referred to as the "Big Blow", the "Freshwater Fury" or the "White Hurricane", was a blizzard with hurricane-force winds that devastated the Great Lakes basin in the United States Midwest and the Canadian province of Ontario from November 7-10, 1913. The storm was most powerful on November 9, battering and overturning ships on four of the five Great Lakes, particularly Lake Huron. Deceptive lulls in the storm and the slow pace of weather reports contributed to the storm's destructiveness.

The deadliest and most destructive natural disaster ever to hit the lakes,[1] the Great Lakes Storm killed more than 250 people, and destroyed 19 ships and stranded 19 others. The financial loss in vessels alone was nearly US$5 million, or about $100 million at current value.[2] This included about $1 million at current value in lost cargo totalling about 68,300 tons, such as coal, iron ore, and grain.[3]

The storm originated as the convergence of two major storm fronts, fuelled by the lakes' relatively warm waters-a seasonal process called a "November gale". It produced 90 mph (145 km/h) winds, waves over 35 feet (11 m) high, and whiteout snowsqualls. Analysis of the storm and its impact on humans, engineering structures and the landscape led to better forecasting and faster responses to storm warnings, stronger and more construction (especially of marine vessels), and improved preparedness.

Date: Wed, 7 Aug 2002 10:33:24 -0700 Amy Grappin: The Great Storm of 1913 took the lives of 230 seaman and beached or sunk 23 lake ships. There was a similar storm in 1940 at very near the same time, early November, November 11 Armistice Day in 1940, and November 9 thru 13 in 1913. It appears that Archie McArthur was not a close relation, but a friend of my grandparents, John and Catherine McArthur, who lived in Duluth where my grandfather worked on a coal dock at foot of the of Third Street. I refer to Archie McArthur as a "kipper and oats" relative or, if they weren't the typical dour Scots, a kiss'in cousin.
There a number of books still on the active lists recounting the massive storm of November 1913, the storm conditions were probably similar to that prevailing at the time of the Perfect Storm that has been described in a realistic novel of the same name. Not a time to be out on the Lake Huron or the North Atlantic!
