Angus Cameron Rae was born on 29 December 1863 in Sydenham Township, Grey County, Ontario, Canada. Twin with Angnes. He appeared in the census on 4 April 1881 in St Vincent Township, Grey County, Ontario, Canada. He died of injuries from an automobile/train accident on 11 December 1924 in Markdale, Ontario, Canada. Markdale Standard December 18, 1924

"An accident with fatal results occurred at the C.P.R. crossing one afternoon in December 1924, when the southbound passenger train hit an automobile in which Angus C. Rae and his son, Roy, were driving west. They were on their way to see Mr. Rae's sister, Mrs. William Kinney, who had been seriously ill for several days.

Under ordinary conditions the accident could have been avoided, but the slippery conditions of the road made it impossible to stop the car before it reached the crossing. When Mr. Rae saw he could not stop, he turned the front wheel towards the station, but the rear end skidded around and was struck by the last coach on the train.

The auto was badly damaged but both occupants appeared to have escaped serious injury, although Mr. Rae, who was on the side next to the train, suffered severly from the shock. He was taken to the home of Joseph Dennison where he gradually grew worse. He became unconscious about 6:00 p.m., passing away about half an hour later.

The body was taken to his home at Harkaway where the funeral took place."

From: Max Scott
To: TAYLOR, Kim ,
David/JoAnn and Kim:
Some notes about Benjamin Rae the father of Thomas Rae of the Quaas Farm, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.. We have no definite birth date for Benjamin but it most likely was 1762 at Scroggs Mill, Lockerbie.. There is one thing that must be born in mind about people who come from the Annandale part of Dumfresshire which includes Lockerbie: school was available for all children as from the age of five to the age of ten. One thing is certain about Benjamin: he could read and write and was reasonably educated in comparison with the people of his time.
I hope these help. Best wishes Max
1. It is nearly but not 100% certain that Benjamin was the son of Joseph Rae G7P176 the miller of Scroggs near Lockerbie. His younger years are mostly unknown to us and the first we come across him as a working man was when he was employed at Mains Farm at Lockerbie Townfoot. During this time he appears to have been a young scamp and was forever in minor trouble due to his adolescent, unthinking ways.
2. It is NOT PROVEN that his parents were Joseph Rae and Julina Johnston of Scroggs and there is a slight chance that they may have been Benjamine Rae and Margaret Fursyth of Hilsyde Farm 4km north of Lockerbie. He certainly worked at Hilsyde during his early adolescence. In his late adolescence he left Hilsyde and went to work at Easdailerigg to the south of Lockerbie and while there had an illegitimate son named David. The mother is not known nor is the fate of the child.
2. His wild days ended when he met Jenny Bell who had also come to work as a farm servant at Mains. Jenny had a profound influence on him and they decided to marry. But this action, too, was to get Benjamin into trouble. Their marriage was by the old Scottish ceremony of handsel which did not call for the use of a minister of the church but which had to be ratified by all of the couple's neighbours and friends. The church session in Lockerbie wanted to haul Benjamin up and reprimand him before the whole congregation. However However, Benjamin and Jenny refused to let this happen and promptly left the Lockerbie church to attend the neighbouring St Mungo one.
3. Benjamin was a ploughman all of his working life and this was a well thought of position in society. It was a step higher than the ordinary farm servants and nearly on a par with the farm tenants. The farm he worked on after leaving Mains was The Quaas. He never left that farm to work anywhere else.
4. Benjamin died in 1800 but the cause of his early death is not known. It is thought that it may have been from the famine which hit the district from 1800 to 1803 but we cannot be sure with our present state of knowledge.
5. One thing in government administration always affected Benjamin: repairs of local roads. Scottish law demanded that all farm people able to use a plough had to assist in the care of the local roads and particularly the main roads in and out of the district.. It is known that Benjamin joined in with the annual work days.
