Sweetser was born (date unknown). There was some dispute among decendants, but Mary was likely German or French, living in England w/ her family.

Spouse: Louisa Sweetzer-1797. Children were: Mary Ann Sweetser-44.

Mary Ann Sweetser was born on 6 March 1851 in Stratfield, Hampshire, England. Notes taken from Joan Mills 10 April 2002.
As Joan understands what was told to her by Elizabeth Moon, Mary Ann Sweetzer (Sweetser) was born in a boarding house in London to a German woman who arrived from Germany enroute to some place in the midlands towards Wales, where her husband and 2 sons had established a hand made instruments factory that employed several Germans. Elizabeth said the spelling was with a "z", but Grace Moon claims it was with an "s". Elizabeth said the mother's lack of knowledge of British rules is why Mary Ann's birth was never registered. She was baptized on 29 March 1851 in St. Pancras, London, England.44 She lived in Wandsworth Common, Battersea, Surrey, England, at Bolingbroke House on 12 March 1876.45 Mary died about 1915 in South Norwood, Surrey, England. She was buried about 1915 in Croydon, Surrey, England, at Croydon Cemetery. Grace Moon believes b. 1842, m. 1868.
Joan Moon believes she was a German Jew. Parents: Sweetser-1446 and Louisa Sweetzer-1797.

Spouse: Isaac Moon-43. Mary Ann Sweetser and Isaac Moon were married on 12 March 1876 in Battersea, Surrey, England, at the Parish Church.46 The marriage licance shows Mary Ann as being 20 however we later find this to be an error, as she was about 26 at the time. Research work on the Moon family commenced by seeking the marriage of your grandparents, Isacia Moon and Maria Sweetzer. Clearly, it was known that this event had occurred before your father's birth in 1892. A search was carried out within the indexes of General Registration.

Since 1837 we have had the benefit of the records of General Registration in England and Wales. Apart from omissions due to ignorance and personal foibles, most births, marriages and deaths that have occurred have been put upon record. There are four index volumes for each year (eight in the case of early marriages) and each one weighs approximately 25 lbs. Our searchers do not have access to the original copies of the certified entries of the events and can only work from these indexes which give the bare details of names and registration areas. These notations are then checked by officials of the Registrar General's Department for precise particulars of the original entry. For each check there is a fee payable in addition to that charged for the certified copy when it is issued. In making these checks we do have to bear in mind the orthographic variations that occur due to phonetic spelling of surnames by the local registrars and parochial clergy. Also, there are the problems of children who are unnamed at the date of registration and marriage entries where only one of the parties is recorded in the indexes. In the early years there is a high proportion of omissions but from about 1875 there is a better chance of finding full references.

However, due to modem technology, we have been able to acquire a full set of microfiche copies of the contents of the volumes from St Catherine's House.

Although this acquisition has entailed a very expensive outlay we can now study these indexes from 1837 to 1983 in our own offices, so saving considerably on time and costs. Of course, we still have to apply to London or to the individual Register Offices for copies of the original certificates.
Isaac Moon and Mary Ann Sweetser were married on the 12th March 1876 in the parish church of Battersea. Isaac described himself as a 32 year old bachelor and railway servant of 8 Saunders Street. He was the son of Isaac Moon, a blacksmith. Mary Ann Sweetser was a 20 year old spinster of Bolingbroke House, Wandsworth Common.
Witnesses to the ceremony were H Moon and E Morgan.
The age given by Mary Ann at the time of her marriage suggested that she would have been born around the year of 1856. A search was carried out between
1855 and 1857 for any birth of a person of this name. There proved to be two of these. The first was a Mary Ann Sweetser born in the Clerkenwell registration district in the June quarter of 1856 and the second was a Maria Sweetser born in the Malling registration district in Kent, in the September quarter of 1856. The earlier entry seemed more likely to be correct and a copy of this was obtained. However, this birth record is for Mary Ann Sweetser born on the 18th May 1856 at I Merlin's Place in Clerkenwell. She was described as the daughter of James Sweetser, a carpenter and Caroline Elizabeth Sweetser, formerly Jones. The worrying feature of this birth record is the fact that no father is mentioned at the time of Mary Ann's marriage.
In normal circumstances, this would indicate an illegitimate birth. Clearly, on some occasions, an individual may not have remembered their father's name if he died when they were very young and it is conceivable that this is what has happened here. However, it may also be sensible to obtain the birth registered in Kent.
For the time being, it seemed sensible to try and obtain some additional background information on the family and, in particular, to discover them in census returns. For this reason, a search was carried out for the birth record of one of your uncles. This was Fred Moon, born around the year of 1880. In fact, we found him registered as Isaac Frederick Moon and he was born on the 26th July 1880 at 3 Mayfield Villas, Carmichael Road in South Norwood. He was described as the son of Isaac Moon and Mary Ann Sweetser and his occupation at this point was a railway station inspector. We now had an address that could be examined in the 1881 census returns.
It may be of interest to you to know the origin of censuses in this country. Although they were clearly never compiled for the benefit of genealogists, later ones do contain information of considerable value in the tracing of family histories. At various times in the history of this country, population surveys have been carried out for statistical purposes to evaluate the taxable or military strength of the nation. However, it was not until 1801 that the system of decennial censuses aimed at obtaining an accurate account of the numbers of people living was first made. The enumerations of 1801 through to 1831 are of no particular genealogical value but in 1841, for the first time the names of persons in every household are recorded, together with their approximate ages and whether or not they were born in the same county as they were then living. In 1851, and subsequently, precise ages are given together with the place and county of birth and relationship to the head of the household for each named person. Later censuses give more information which is of social and historical importance but it is this detail of place of birth which enables the genealogist to bridge the gap between the records of the Registrar General of registered births, marriages and deaths and those of the parishes held by upwards of 12,000 incumbents throughout the Kingdom. It is essential, however, to have knowledge of the place of residence of the family at the time of the enumerator's visit for the purpose of making the census. Such information can be obtained from family records, certificates, or sometimes local directories, electoral rolls or rating lists.

The Moon family were recorded as follows:

Residence: Carmichael Rd., 3 Mayfield Villas

NAME RELATIONSHIP STATUS AGE RANK/ COUNTY OF WHERE BORN
TO HEAD OCCUPATION ORIGIN
Isaac MOON Head Mar 37 Railway servant Somerset Ashwick
Mary A '' Wife '' 30 London St. Pancras
Isaac F '' Son 9mo Surrey S Norwood
Elizth '' Dau 4 '' Clapham

Certainly, it was interesting to note that Isaac came from Somerset and would have been born sometime around the year of 1843 but it was also of assistance to discover that Mary was from London. This would seem to exclude the Kent birth as a possibility for her own. However, Mary's age was considerably greater than we would have expected at this date. We do wonder whether the individual from the Registrar General's Department who has actually provided the handwritten copy of the marriage record of Isaac and Maria may have misread her age. If she was 26, rather than 20 in 1876, then this would fit the census age perfectly.

We went on to examine a finding index based on many baptismal and marriage details from parish registers in London. We were delighted when we found reference to the baptism of Mary Ann Sweetzer, the daughter of Louisa, on the 29th March 1851 at St Pancras. We are confident that this is the correct reference to Mary Ann and the next step here must be to obtain a copy of her civil birth record, assuming this to have been registered, in order to obtain an address that can be examined in census returns.
