He served in the military First Battalion, Kings Royal Regiment of New York about 1776 in New York, United States. Donald Cameron's claim for losses suffered as a result of the American Revolution, indicates that he was a native of Scotland, came to America in 1773, and settled in Tyron County, New York. He lived on the farm of his father, Angus Cameron, who was a tenant on Sir John Johnson's land. Donald Cameron joined the First Battalion of the King's Royal Regiment of New York, under Sir. John Johnston, at the start of the War in 1776; but he later transferred to the First Battalion of the 84th Regiment, known as "The Highland Emigrants". He served till the end of the War. Donald's claim for losses was heard by the Loyalist Commissioners in Montreal on January 28, 1788.

Margaret Fraser was a daughter of Donald Fraser who was also a private in the First Battalion of the 84th Regiment. Donald Fraser and his son William joined the King's Royal Regiment of New York under Sir John Johnson at the start of the war and later transferred to the First Battalion of the 84th. They were taken prisoners in 1778 by the rebels, and spent sixteen months in a gaol in New England, when they escaped and rejoined their regiment. Angus served in the military United Empire Loyalist on 28 January 1788 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. As a military claimant Donald Cameron was granted lands in Stormont County, Ontario. During the 1840's no less than five of the children of Donald Cameron and Margaret Fraser moved to Sydenham and St. Vincent Townships, Grey County, from Stormont County with their families. Many of these Camerons made this trip togther. One of the reasons for moving to Grey County was the poor condition of the timber trade in Stormont County.

He secured a location ticket from Telfer for lot 16 concession "C". However for at least the first year or two, Donald lived in the MacGregor log house with his parents and the rest of the family directly across the road on lot 16 concession "B".
