James Dean Fairbairn was born on 3 September 1862 in Fergus, Ontario, Canada. He died of heart failure on 14 July 1930 in Arthur Township, Ontario, Canada. Cause of death: Heart failure
Registration - Death: 37255-30

The Late James Fairbairn
After a long illness patiently borne with quiet Christian fortitude, James Fairbairn passed away at his home in Arthur Township on Monday July 14. The funeral which was one of the largest seen in the district in some time took place on Wednesday afternoon to Belsyde Cemetery, Fergus. The services were conducted by Rev Mr Copeland of Arthur, assisted by Rev Mr McDonald of Mount Forest. those who acted as pallbearers were: Messers T Murphy, W J Church, N McTavish, L McTavish, I Ritchie and T Howatt. The floral offerings were very numerous and beautiful testifying to the esteem in which the deceased was held, while the large cortege which followed the remains to their lastresting place gave further evidence of the regret which is passing has occasioned.
The late Mr Fairbairn was born in West Garafraxa in 1862. With the exception of a few years spent in Melancthon Township and in the West, his life was spent in West Garafraxa, West Luther and Arthur Townships.
He was highly esteemed by all with whom he came in contact, and he possessed a genial disposition which made for him many friends. In religion he was a Presbyterian and a memeber of St Andrew's Church, Arthur.
In 1887, he was married to Elizabeth Howatt of West Garafraxa by whom he is survived with a family of four sons and five daughters; Stanley A, Smiths Falls; William J of Edmonton; John and Dryden at home; Mrs Coutts of Shelburne; Mrs Deacon of Toronto; Mrs Edwards of Montreal; Mrs Collins of Toronto; and Mrs Benham of West Luther. He is also survived by three brothers: George and David of Carnduff, Sask, and W J of Redcliffe, Alta, and one sister Mrs T Young of Elora. [newspaper clipping, 1930]

He was buried on 16 July 1930 in Fergus, Ontario, Canada. Imported gedcom from Donna said burial was in Maryborough Township, however newspaper below says Fergus. JAMES D. FAIRBAIRN
(An Appreciation)
A summer's day perfect in its great beauty! The rolling fields of grain, waving a subdued restlessness like the near-still waves of the sea. The maple woods like waterlily leaves, green upon the hushed bosom of rivers, telling where the open spaces are. Here and there over the landscape winding streams run like silvery tracery upon the silken surface of rich tapestry. Above the azure blueflecked with cumulus clouds which scintilate the varied colours of the sun, until one thinks he stands beneath the trescoed feiling of a great cathedral.
On such a day the matchless spirit of James Fairbairn was called and answering the call, was carried over the eternal hills of God's Infinities. The transparency of the day seemed to match the transparency of this simple yet great life. Jim as we called him with warm affection has passed on.
The things human beings have always hungered most for were the things Jim Fairbairn possessed in abundance -- companions. It is impossible to write in afew words the story of his life crowned so richly with an aristrocracy of friends. Before a man has friends he must be a friend himself and I question very much if any friend or even a stranger ever called in vain upon Jim Fairbairn. The door of his home was never locked while the latch key of his heart hung where tired hands might reach and not reach in vain.
He never trod the halls of classic learning, but he walked with patient feet in the University of Everyday and paused many times at the desk of some discouraged student of life. He never held the golden keys of material wealth, but within the spacious vaults of his generous heart he safely treasured the serious con secrets of many an aching confidence. To the glad crown seeking heartsease in comedy and song he was never a leader but he knew the majesty of individual council and weeping eyes were often dried, while smiles grew as worries fled when Jim with quiet philosophy and kindly humor brightened up the drab places of life.
Jim was a great friend. He was twenty odd years the writer's senior as men measure time, but from my boyhood days to the week he died the tempo of his life always matched mine. This was true of all his friends. Young men in thir teens knew the comradship of a happy pal who shared with them their laughter and plans. Old men loved him for the radiance of youth which persisted undimmed to the last.
The other day the vast crowd which gathered at his home and followed him in the final chapter of his life attested the depth of affection to which they held him. We could not dispel the gloomy feeling that five o'clock in the afternoon was far too soon for night to fall. Very often the best part of the day comes after five o'clock and it should have been in this case. But the cruel injuries of a series of accidents were triumphant in their deadly work and a strong man was compelled to leave his tasks too soon. Too soon for the widow and mother whose lonely path leads disconsolately along the highway of life. Too soon, for those sons and daughters busy in the of home-making themselves. Too soon for those of us who knew him well and loved him for his stirling qualities. Too soon -- But in the oconomy of God, nothing is lost. Strong men are needed for special tasks, Who Knows? The glass is dark but sometime, somewhere the transparent setting of the life of Jim Fairbairn will be silhouetted against a glory more grand than the enchanting beauty of a perfect summer's day.
We face new tasks and new experiences with stronger steps and lighter hearts because we knew him. Because he helped us. Because he was a friend to man. He never condemned. He never complained. He praised. he encouraged. The success and power of the life of Jim Fairbairn is not over. He lived that others might be a little bit happier. He laughed when the sun shone and with solemn silence he walked with us in the shadows. A great life. A great memory. A great example. The world is richer because he lived. The glory of his life is not lost in the mystery of death.

George, Herbert "Duke" and Jessie, who are all listed in the Census of 1871 as Fairbairn's and likely children of Relief, but w/o birth records for them or a marriage record for Relief, we can only assume they are her children. In any event they are Fairbairn's, but could have been adopted after the marriage of Wm. & Relief.
At the time of the census, Relief, George, Herbert "Duke" and Jessie, were all residing with William Henry Stonehouse, his wife Elizabeth Fairbairn and their 2 children Thomas and John. A timeline would look something like this:
