Pisgah 16, stone 2, Shelburne, Dufferin County, Ontario, Canada] Parents: George Herbert Michael (Herb) Gardner-1911 and Francis Stewart-1910. Spouse: John Alexander Scace-6814. Sarah "Doris" Gardner and John Alexander Scace were married on 1 February 1922 in Corbetton, Melancthon Township, Dufferin County, Ontario, Canada. "Scace - - Gardiner An event of much interest to the residents of this vicinity was the marriage of Miss Sarah Doris, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herb Gardiner, "Nestle-in Farm," Route 4, Corbetton, to Mr. John A. Scace, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Scace, Riverview, on February 1st, at four o'clock. The bride, who looked charming in a white satin charmeuse frock, elaborately beaded, heirloom bridal veil caught up with pretty flow- corsage of Richmond roses, her only ornament the groom's gift, a string of pearls, entered the drawing room on the arm of her father, to the strains of Mendelssohn's wedding march, played by Miss Margaret Duncan, who wore sand tricollette. Rev. G. W. Rose, of Corbetton, officiated. In the presence of about seventy-five relatives and friends. After congratulations and the signing of the register dinner was served, the tables being beautifully decorated with single roses in cut glass vases placed at intervals. Rev. Mr. Rose offered the toast to the bride and groom, the groom responding creditably. A very pleasant evening was spent in dancing and cards. Luncheon was served at midnight. The bride and groom left the following day for Fergus and Toronto. The bride's going away costume was of navy blue broadcloth trimmed with fur, hat and gloves to match. Many excellent as well as useful gifts (among them a number of cheques) testified to the esteem in which the young couple are held. Mr. and Mrs. Scace will reside at Riverview, where they will be at home to their many friends. Many friends were present at the wedding from a distance." [The Shelburne Economist, February 9, 1922 - NOTE - not certain whether this is the entire clipping] "Riverview Businessman Passes Harry Alfred Scace was born in England in 1872 and came to Canada in 1888 at the age of 16 and lived on a farm near Arthur, Ontario with a family by the name of Birchnells. The next few years saw him farming on the 2nd line of Luther and then the Riverview Road (7th of Melancthon) where he worked on 2 other farms. On June 11, 1896 he married Isabella Corbett and proceeded to raise seven children, the second eldest being John Alexander Scace who was born on Sept. 15, 1901 on the former Hughes farm which Harry had purchased in 1898. It was here that John was raised with his brothers and sisters and attended school at SS #10 Melancthon just north of his father's farm. Some of his childhood memories were of a father that did neither smoke or drink, read his bible every day and attended the Church of God. His mother he remembers as a hard worker on the farm and in the home was badly crippled after a fall and suffered with arthritis. He remembers walking many times into Riverview and skating on the open fields with wooden skates, screwnailed to his boots. Riverview at that time was a booming town, boasting of 2 general stores, 2 mills and a hotel. The school that John attended still stands south of Riverview today in disuse and poor repair. John was self employed most of his life, mainly in the transportation business. The year 1919 saw John with a team of horses and wagon picking up cream from farmers in the area and delivering it to the McCabe farm at the corner of the 7th of Amaranth and the town line (now Hwy. 89). Here the cream was transferred to a cream truck owned by the Laurel Creamery. This truck had single hard tires. John married Sarah Doris Gardiner in Corbetton on 1921 and lived on the first farm south of Riverview on the east side which John had purchased. Their first son, George Alexander Harry Scace was born here in 1922 and died of crib death at the age of 7 months in 1923. Their second oldest son Herbert John Perciville Scace was also born here on Jan 30, 1925. It was about this time, 1925, that Mr. Hugh's the owner of the Laurel Creamery purchased the Shelburne Creamery which was located near the railway tracks in Shelburne. John drove a truck belonging to the Laurel Creamery. Later in 1925, John having problems with Asthma, rented a house in the village of Riverview belonging to the Campbells (this house is now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Brian Crawford). Here he operated a grocery store with his wife's help. A Model T Ford truck with single tires was purchased in 1926 and used to transport cream and eggs to the Shelburne Creamery. On July 9, 1926 their first daughter Francis Evelyn was born followed on June 12, 1927 with the birth of Isabella Elenore. The year was 1929, his brother George took over the cream and egg business and John bought a 1929 Chev truck with single tires to draw livestock to Toronto. The Chev truck was purchased from McTavish in Flesherton for $900.00. The racks cost an additional $65.00. The roads at this time were rough and unpaved and the tires would blow out every five to six hundred miles. A trip to Toronto would take three hours each way. In 1929 John and his fmaily moved to the four corners of Riverview on the south east side again a grocery store and took over the post office. The 1929 Chev was traded in on a 1930 Chev with Dual tires purchased from Alex Mathews in Shelburne. In 1931 he traded again for a newer model and dual tires from Wallace Tipping of Tottenham. The Model A and Model T Fords were just coming into style. 1932 saw both John and his wife Doris picking up livestock with a model A Ford and trailer. A 1932 REO Speed Wagon purchased by John was involved in a collision in the fog near Brampton in 1933. Three passengers in the car were Lorne Middaugh, Art Campbell and Stan Brown. Stan Brown, now a resident of Dufferin Oaks in Shelburne was badly crippled in the accident. From 1933 to 1951 John purchased several new trucks always moving up to something better. In 1951, he pruchased Watson Transport in Orangeville giving him a total of four trucks. He sold the trucking business in 1966 which by that time had modern trucks with hoists and eighteen foot racks to transport farm supplies, livestock and furniture. John Scace always tried to serve the public to the best of his ability. In 1933 Doris and John and family moved across the road to the north east corner and operated a store and post office there. This building still stands and continues to be operated by Helen and Pat Young and family as a general store (1987). The store on the south east corner was destroyed by fire in later years and replaced by the Blue Bird Dance Hall. It was here that daughter Evelyn who married Len Myers a long time employee of Scace Transport, in 1945 held their wedding reception. The year 1947, saw the marriages of son Herbert to Audrey Grey in Corbetton and daughter Elenore to Jack McLean in Riverview. Doris and John went on a trip to the West Coast and Florida and attended a reunion of the Scace family in Pittsfield, Mass., John's mother, Isabella Corbett Scace, died at home in Riverview in 1947 at the age of 72. The funeral service was held at the Riverview Church and she was buried in Shelburne Cemetery. In 1948, the store was sold to son Herb and Doris and John moved to a new house they had built on the north west corner. John's wife Sarah Doris Scace died on Oct. 26, 1956. Funeral services were held at the Riverview Church and she was buried in Shelburne Cemetery. As we have already written John sold his trucking business in 1966 although at the time of his death (1987), he still owned the building in Shelburne which bears the name Scace Transport. On November 11, 1969 at the parsonage in Corbetton, John Married Grace Ferrier Gardiner. Grace had two children by a former marriage and so by this union John became a step father to Ronald Gardiner and his wife Mabel, and Jean McGuire and her husband Bruce, and step granddad to Stewart Gardiner, Danny, Herb, Ronald and David McGuire of which he was very proud. John enjoyed relatively good health most of his life, but in 1970, he underwent surgery at the hospital in Owen Sound to have the cataracts removed from his eyes. John and Grace both enjoyed a trip to Israel and Bethlehem in 1979. Water brought back from the Jordan River was used in John's re-baptism. Both great grandchildren, Michael and Sarah Scace, were baptised with this water from the Jordan River as were many others in the United Church in Riverview. John's daughter Isabella Elenore Scace McLean died on June 20, 1976 at the age of 49. Poor vision caused John to stop driving in 1980 although his wife drove and still does today. His poor eyesight hampered many of his favourite pastimes such as reading and playing cards but he enjoyed visiting with friends and being read to by his wife Grace. John was, predeceased by his son Herb on January 10, 1982 in his 57th year in Toronto. He was buried in Shelburne, Ont. and funeral services were held in the Riverview Church. For both his 80th and 85th birthday John was feted with special birthday parties attended by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. No man was more loved and respected by his family than John. Early in 1987, John's health seemed to decline, not a man to complain, he often said he wasn't up to par and it was unusual not to see him out for his daily fresh air no matter what the weather. Late in March he was hospitalized for a short time and returned home on Saturday April 11. Early Monday April 13, he died quietly at home, with him at the time were his wife Grace and daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn and Len Myers. As with many of his family before him, funeral services were held in the Riverview United church and on Thursday April 16, and he was buried in Shelburne Cemetery. John Alexander Scace, born and raised in Riverview was a pioneer of his time. A man who felt it necessary that the village of Riverview shouldn't died and its history be preserved was always anxious to pass on to others his knowledge of the area. By writing this article John, I hope I am doing just that. Most of the information was taken from well kept Scace family tree and an article written as a school essay by granddaughter Nedyne Myers at the age of 12 in her 1961-62 school year."
